Make Over Your Wardrobe

With the fresh start of a brand new year, it抯 always tempting to shed last year抯 fashion for something completely new. But when you抮e still in the middle of the freezing winter, how do you shake things up? We asked fashion stylist Jess Mederos to help us get rid of the fashion blues and inject some life back into our wardrobe. Jess teaches us how to work with what you抳e already got in our closet, some new pieces to look out for and tells us which trends to say goodbye to immediately.

What are some trend pieces from our 2013 closet that we should make sure to keep around for the new year?
Crop Tops: Crop tops is a trend that seems to be staying around for another couple of seasons. Keep it classy by pairing one with a high-waisted skirt or trousers to minimize bare midriff.

Wide Leg Trousers: These roomy pants had a moment in 2013, but they have been spotted on the Spring 2014 runways as well. Keep it chic by wearing a pair in an interesting pastel or a beautiful winter white. Also, don抰 be afraid to play with volume on top when you wear these voluminous pants. Try a pair with a roomy sweatshirt-type knit or a shift top.

Mixing Patterns: Stripes with plaid or houndstooth with floral, anything goes. Just be sure the prints are of similar scale (size) and in the same general color palette.

What are some 2013 trends to immediately let go of?
Peplum: I have to say, I抦 really sad to see this one go. A peplum is a super flattering cut on almost every woman. Unfortunately, it seems like we oversaturated the market. For a while stores were chock full of peplum goodies for the taking, now it抯 gotten a little tired.

Wedge Sneakers: This trend totally took over 2013. I had a pair by Chlo myself and, honestly, they were uncomfortable and made me feel like I was trying too hard. I抦 glad to see them go.

Owls: Why are these nocturnal birds on everything from earrings to sweatshirts? Please, unless you抮e super into ornithology, that抯 enough.

What are a few last-minute winter pieces we can add to our wardrobe now?
Tartan: Tartan is a pattern consisting of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors, like a Scottish kilt. This print made a big splash on the Fall/Winter 2013 runways. An interesting tartan scarf or a pair of great-fitting tartan wool pants is a perfect last-minute winter add-on piece, and could possibly be on sale this late in the season!

Winter Whites: A great pair of easy winter white pants or a lightweight sweater for layering will serve you well into the spring. Just be sure not to invest in materials that are too heavy and not easy to transition between seasons.

White Button Down Blouse: An absolute staple in my closet, a great white collared shirt is good in any season and can be used in so many outfit combinations, it抯 almost silly.

What are a few accessories to pick up now that we can keep in rotation for next season?
I think the best fashion accessories are timeless and simple. I am obsessed with these simple but edgy earrings from Anna Sheffield. They have just the perfect amount of punk rock edge, while still looking totally elegant.

A great accessory that will serve you through the bright reflection of winter snow and through the glare of beach season is a great pair of sunnies. These tortoise shell stunners from Karen Walker make me wish winter days were longer so that I could wear them past 4pm before April.

Looking forward to spring, what are some key pieces to keep an eye out for?
For spring 2014, some pieces to incorporate into your wardrobe should include pastels, floral prints in bold colors and black and white graphic prints. Above all, be sure to stay true to who you are when incorporating trends. Make them your own. Confidence is the key to dressing well. Happy 2014!
