A Conversation With...

Tina Craig

Tina Craig, co-founder of the wildly successful handbag blog Bag Snob destination for the fashion-obsessed. Snob Global Media has turned into a lucrative business, partnering with retail powerhouses like Net-a-Porter and Shopbop and design houses like DKNY and prestige denim company DL 1961. We talked to Craig about her favorite designers, how she balances running a media empire with being a mom and which outfits to rock with three iconic handbags.

You were a VJ for MTV Asia in another life. What prompted you to found Bag Snob?
My college best friend, Kelly Cook, and I found ourselves married with newborns and living in the suburbs after spending years in exciting and fast-paced careers. Writing to each other on the blog about our favorite new bags was a way for us to stay creative and entertained while our babies napped!

What was your very first designer bag?
A Gucci logo shoulder bag and matching wallet that my mother gave me when I graduated from high school匢 guess you could say the apple didn抰 fall far from the tree!

If you were only permitted one bag from your collection, which one would it be?
I plead the fifth! My bags are like my babies. It would be impossible to choose only one.

Tell us, what does it mean to be a 揝nob?
A Snob is someone with discerning taste. Money is not necessarily indicative of good taste. Style is a quality you can possess on any budget. The name was tongue-in-cheek and thought up by Kelly's husband, Rich. Trust me, we are Snobby with an uppercase S, never a lowercase one!

If you owned a salon, what would it be called?
Snob Essentials, of course! In my dream world, Sarah Burton, Riccardo Tisci, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo and Jason Wu would all take part in it.

How do you balance running a media empire with being a mom?
I get asked this question all the time卆nd I actually have no clue. I live moment to moment, one day at a time. I don't have a personal assistant (unless you count my iPhone) or a nanny. I cook five nights a week when I抦 not traveling for work and do my best to accommodate everyone梚ncluding myself. Last night I holed myself up in the bathroom for an hour just to read magazines. You can only be good for others when you抮e good to yourself too.

What抯 the greatest lesson you learned from your mom?
Be daring and unafraid to try new things.

What do you like to do in your free time?
My son and I like to walk to the park or ride our bikes to get popsicles. It's the simple things.

How do you normally wear your hair?
I抦 a wash-and-go girl. I only wash my hair two to three times a week. I let it air dry the first day, curl it with an iron the second day and pull it up into a ponytail on the third day. If you see my hair in a ponytail, then you know it抯 dirty.

Who are a few of your favorite designers?
It all depends on my mood, but I love Valentino, Rag and Bone, Jason Wu, Victoria Beckham, Zara, Ala颽, McQueen and Givenchy.

Where do you find inspiration?
My girlfriends! They are all superwomen with multifaceted lives.

Which handbag trends are you looking forward to this upcoming season?
Texture blocking, mixing materials in unexpected and irreverent ways like lizard and leather or calf hair and snakeskin.

From prestige denim company DL 1961 to DKNY, Bag Snob has run the gamut with collaborations. What other exciting things can we look forward to?
We just launched our own handbag line, Snob Essentials, on HSN. It will also be sold in Europe at luxury online retailer Luisa via Roma. This has been a long time in the making. It抯 a collection we抮e very proud of!

The Herm鑣 Birkin, Chanel Classic Flap Bag and C閘ine Trapeze Bag are three iconic bags that we love厀hat outfits would you wear with each?
With the Birkin, I stick to jeans and a t-shirt since it抯 enough of a statement on its own. In terms of hair, skip the blow-out and go for sexy, beachy waves. The bag is on the sophisticated side so you want a fun, youthful look when carrying it. For the Chanel, I love wearing a ladylike look like a waist-cinching skirt paired with a crop top and sleek, straight hair. Lastly, with the C閘ine I抦 all about having fun with the look. A brightly colored pantsuit with a high ponytail shows off your wilder side, which can be the perfect contrast to a classic bag.
