Country Strong

Following Wednesday night抯 CMA Awards梔ubbed Country Music抯 Biggest Night梬e chatted with Nashville salon owner and stylist Stephanie Fulton Trail, who has styled celebrities backstage at the CMAs, the annual summer CMA Festival and the CMA Country Christmas special (airing December 1 on ABC).

What抯 it like going backstage at the CMAs?
It抯 really, really cool. It抯 such a laid-back atmosphere where everyone just hangs out with each other and mingles. It抯 great to see that the musicians and celebrity presenters are people just like us. I was part of the official backstage team from 2006 to 2010 and styled everyone from Blake Shelton and Dave Matthews to The Judds and Carrie Underwood抯 crew. This year, my Salon Nfuse team members and I went to various hotels around Nashville to style celebrities such as Kellan Lutz (Twilight) and Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family). I actually got to sit in the audience this year, which was amazing. It was fun to see the show from a different perspective.

You did Kellan抯 hair. Which Oribe products did you use?
I prepped hair for the blow-dry with Foundation Mist and Cr鑝e for Style. Then I used Rough Luxury to get the shape and finish.

What other CMA-related activities have you been involved in?
Yesterday I was backstage at the taping of the CMA Country Christmas special, which features 10 or so acts singing holiday songs. I styled Vince Gill, Scott McCreery, the backup orchestra and dancers, and more. I used a lot of Superfine for touch-ups and to keep styles in place. I also used Supershine on some of the performer抯 hands, arms and legs to give them a little sparkle for close-ups!

I also have done hair for the CMA Festival, a big outdoor concert, the past five years. In that time, I抳e worked with Melissa Peterman, Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, Josh Turner, Easton Corbin卝ust to name a few. That抯 always a blast because it抯 out in the open and very relaxed.

How have the styles changed since you first got involved with the country music scene?
It抯 gotten much more modern. There抯 not as much teased up, bouffant-style hair, which is great. Those overdone looks just aren抰 cool anymore.

Which celebs have changed their styles the most? Whose looks have stayed the same?
Wynona Judd has come a long way since the 80s! Haha. Kellie Pickler looks so much different than she did when she started out, as does Carrie Underwood. Taylor Swift, Keith Urban and Loretta Lynn rarely change it up.

Who has the best hair梞ale and female?
For women, Carrie Underwood. She is always trying new things while remaining classic at the same time. You can tell she抯 very comfortable with who she is and likes to have fun with her style. For guys, it抯 kind of hard to tell because they all wear hats!

Favorite Oribe products?
I use Cr鑝e for Style and Dry the most. Cr鑝e for Style can really be used on anyone卛t抯 just about the amount you put on the hair. I was using Dry a lot backstage at the CMAs last year and everyone was commenting on the smell. A lot of people actually recognized it!
